Linking, whether we’re linking to another site or our site is being linked to, is an important part of Search engine optimization. How a site and search engine treats links is very important. Here is guide to know seo basics of nofollow and dofollow links.
Backlinks are one of the most important factor of off page optimisation to rank our website on Search result pages (SERPs). There are many backlinks, and all are not considered important.
Considering which backlinks are important and which links should be directed to our website, understanding nofollow and dofollow backlinks is very essential part of it.
What are internal links?
Internal links are ones to our site from residing pages belonging to our own domain.
What are external links?
External links are ones to our site from residing pages not belonging to our domain.
When we organise the link-building process for our website, we should clearly understand which links and pages must be crawled by robots.
What is nofollow and dofollow link (nofollow vs dofollow links)
What is dofollow link?
When Google bots are crawling a website they look for external links which point to other websites. If the link is “do follow” then search engines will follows the link and so link juice is passed.
<a href=http://www.website1.com rel=”dofollow”> website1</a>
<a href=http://www.website1.com rel=”external”> website1</a>
Notice the rel=”dofollow” and rel=”external” above. This define the link as do follow. Also if you do not use rel attribute the link will be treated as ‘dofollow’.
These links are important in terms of SEO as they are tracked by search engines and the value (which is called link juice) of the links also gets transferred.
We should always try to get dofollow links from good website.
What is nofollow link?
If a search engine finds a “no follow” link, it will just ignore the link and will not get deeper into crawling and no link juice is passed.
<a href=http://www.website1.com rel=”nofollow”> website1</a>
Notice the “nofollow” attribute in the above code. This defines a code as “nofollow”.
So “nofollow” backlinks are not important in terms of search engines as it is not crawled.
The comments section mostly have no follow links.
But that does not mean that these links are useless. You can still get some quality traffic from these also.
